Instagram stands as a formidable castle in the digital landscape, a vibrant hub where attention congregates and flows. Within its walls, Reels emerged as a dominant force, captivating users with short-form video content. Yet, even in such a well-fortified platform, we often find glowing cracks where attention leaks out, overlooked opportunities for focused distribution. We noticed one such seam, a subtle but significant opening around original audio creators on Instagram Reels.

What we noticed: The unshared spotlight

For months, we observed that many original audio creators on Instagram had their sounds go viral, being used in thousands, sometimes millions, of Reels. These sounds became the backbone for other creators' content, driving immense reach and engagement. However, the original creators themselves often had relatively small follower counts. Their audio was a powerful distribution engine for others, yet they weren't fully capitalizing on this attention for their own growth. It was a clear case of attention leaking away from the source, an unshared spotlight. Other accounts reaped the benefits of their creative output, while they remained in relative obscurity, missing out on the direct credit and exposure that their viral sound generated.

We saw this as a golden opportunity. If we could bridge this gap, connecting our content with the original audio's inherent virality and the creator's under-leveraged audience, we could tap into a highly engaged, context-relevant pool of potential followers. The platform's 'Collab' post feature, specifically, seemed like a perfect conduit, allowing both parties to share the visibility and, crucially, the follower attribution.

The mechanic: Harnessing the original audio stream

Our Growth Hack was designed to find these specific creators and offer a symbiotic relationship. We wanted to leverage their audio, give them credit, and in return, gain exposure to the audience their sound naturally attracted. We ran this experiment over four weeks, focusing on a systematic approach to identifying and engaging these creators.

First, we systematically identified trending original audio clips within our niche that had high usage numbers (thousands to millions of Reels) but were associated with creators who had modest follower counts (typically between 500 and 5,000 followers). These were the creators whose sounds had 'gone big' but they hadn't, representing the prime area of leaked attention.

Next, we drafted personalized direct messages. These weren't generic requests; each message acknowledged their specific audio and its impact, explaining how we admired their creation and wished to use it in a Reel. Crucially, we proposed a 'Collab' post, making it clear that their account would be tagged as a collaborator and our content would appear on both our profiles, expanding their reach too. This offered a clear value exchange.

Once a creator agreed, we crafted short, high-quality Reels that utilized their audio, ensuring the content aligned with both our brand's message and the general vibe of the audio. Our Reels were designed to provide quick value or entertainment, making them shareable and engaging for the target audience.

Finally, we published the Reel as a Collab post, inviting the original audio creator. Upon acceptance, the Reel would appear on both our feeds, exposing our content to their followers and, more importantly, to the vast audience already engaging with that specific audio across the platform. We repeated this process consistently for the duration of the experiment, aiming for several collaborations per week.

What happened: A surge of relevant followers

Over the 28 days of this experiment, we successfully completed 15 collaborative Reels. This mechanic proved to be remarkably effective, yielding over 350 new, highly engaged followers directly attributable to these specific posts. Each successful collaboration resulted in an average 12% increase in immediate profile visits from the Reel, with a consistent 5% direct conversion rate of those visitors into new followers. This meant that for every 100 people who visited our profile from a collab Reel, 5 became followers.

We tracked follower growth daily, specifically noting spikes immediately following the publication of a collaborative Reel. The quality of these new followers was also high; they showed higher engagement rates on subsequent posts compared to followers gained through other organic methods during the same period. The original audio creators, seeing the value, often enthusiastically shared the collab on their stories, amplifying the reach further without additional effort from our side.

Where it held and where it underperformed

The mechanic held exceptionally well in its core function: bringing new, relevant followers to our profile. The 'Collab' feature was instrumental, allowing us to seamlessly share visibility and credit. The greatest success came from partnering with micro-creators - those with 500 to 5,000 followers. They were often more receptive to collaboration proposals and more actively promoted the shared content, indicating their greater hunger for growth themselves.

However, the mechanic did underperform slightly in terms of scalability. While the engagement rate per collaboration was high, identifying suitable creators, drafting personalized messages, securing agreements, and coordinating publication was a time-intensive process. We found that creators with larger followings (above 10,000) were less responsive or required more extensive negotiation, suggesting that the 'crack' of unshared attention diminished as a creator's own platform grew.

What we are running next

Given the strong performance in follower acquisition, we are now exploring how to semi-automate the discovery and outreach phase for these micro-creators, potentially using tools to identify trending audio and corresponding creator profiles more efficiently. We will also test different call-to-actions within the collaborative Reels to further optimize the conversion rate from view to follow.
